Using Magic Overlays in the dotPhoto show

This dotPhoto Show teaches you how to use "Magic Overlays" to animate elements of a photo.  This technique is useful to highlight titles, call attention with pointers or even to add new people to a picture.  And it's surprisingly easy to do.

Changing, Adding or Turning Off Music in the dotPhoto Show

Many people ask how to change or turn off music in the dotPhoto Show.  Here's a short, narrated show that explains how it's done:

Selling Your Photos on dotPhoto

Dear dotPhoto Reseller,

Welcome to dotPhoto! – where you can share and sell your photos, and also do just about everything imaginable with digital images.

This newsletter is designed to answer most of the questions new professional photographers and editors have about selling on dotPhoto, and to provide the information you need to get started.

Selling on dotPhoto.com is simple:

  • It is free to store your photos on dotPhoto and free to operate your own photo web site.
  • You get most of the money. For instance, if you sell a 4x6 for $5, dotPhoto is paid 12 cents for production, 3% (15 cents) for the credit card, and 15% of the markup. You will earn $4.29 on this sale.
  • You can set your own prices. To set your own prices, go to the My Account section, tell us how to pay you, and set prices on about 100 items (or use the suggested prices.) Then apply the plans to your albums – you can have multiple plans that apply to different albums.
  • dotPhoto pays you twice a month if you are on direct deposit and you earn over $10 for that period – we put money directly into your bank account.
  • You have lots of privacy options. You can password protect each album so that when your guests sign in, they will only see the album(s) that you want them to see. If multiple albums share the same passwords, your guests will see those albums.
  • You can link everything on dotPhoto to your web site and even embed dotPhoto Shows in your web site or blog. This blog tells more about how to do it: dotPhoto on Google Blogger
  • You can use the dotPhoto Show to tell multimedia stories that you can sell as DVDs in addition to prints. The dotPhoto Show includes your choice of music, dramatic "Ken Burns" effects, transitions and even narration. You can embed dotPhoto Shows in your web site to augment your newspaper's stories.
  • You can use dotPhoto's invitation system to invite your customers to see images, and you can track the results of those visits.
  • You can choose which dotPhoto products you want to sell. Here is a current list: dotPhoto Product List, but we're adding to it all the time.

To get started, simply log in, click on the My Account link, tell us how you want to be paid, and set your prices. If you'd like help, please give us a call at 609/ 434-0340 x 400.

Even more detailed information about dotPhoto's pro tools and policies can be found below.

All the best,

Glenn Paul

More information…

Everything you need is in the My Account link at the top of every page on dotPhoto.  My Account leads to all kinds of information about your account including "Selling Your Photos."  Click on the links in "Selling Your Photos" to establish price plans, track orders, upload your own logo to your dotPhoto account or tell dotPhoto how to pay you.

Free Storage
dotPhoto will store your photos free as long as you are actively engaged with your pictures. We define "active engagement" as visiting your account every 90 days. This should not be a problem for most photographers, but, if for some reason you cannot visit your photos and want to maintain them, a dotPhoto Annual Membership Plan (only $24.95) guarantees your storage without your participation. dotPhoto terms may change from time to time; for full details, please click on the "Terms" link at the bottom of the dotPhoto home page.

Monitoring Your Sales
You can see your photo sales and orders under Order Tracking in the My Account section.

Can I be paid by check?
Yes, but we would prefer that you use the direct deposit. People lose their checks, and we have to rely on the mail to get your money to you. Direct deposit is faster, and everyone is happy. However, if you prefer to receive a check, dotPhoto pays check customers on the first of each month. There is a one dollar charge per check, which is deducted from your account.

When will I be paid?
dotPhoto pays 30 days after sales are made to allow for credit card collections and potential charge-backs by purchasers. For instance, your earnings for the month of October will be paid on December 1 or the first weekday thereafter. If you are a direct deposit customer, your earnings are paid on the first weekday after the 1st and the 15th. Your earnings from October 1 to 15 would be paid on November 15, and your earnings from October 16-31 would be paid on December 1. dotPhoto pays when you have accrued at least $10 in earnings.

Who handles customer service?
dotPhoto guarantees that your customers will be satisfied with our workmanship. dotPhoto handles quality issues directly with the purchaser.

What should I tell my customers about cropping?
Photos are sometimes cropped for a specific space that is not well suited for standard print sizes. For instance, suppose you want to print a square image on the popular 4" by 6" photo paper: if the square photo fills up the photo paper space, then the customer will not see the top and bottom inch of the photo. To see the whole photo, the customer must order the photo "uncropped," which, in this case, would put the square image in the middle of the 4x6 print with an inch of white space on either side. We suggest that you crop your photos so that, when cropped, faces and bodies appear on the major print types: 4x6, 5x7 and 8x10.

If you do not crop your prints, we suggest adding this language for ordering photos to your web site or:

We recommend that you order photos "uncropped" to ensure that you see your entire photo, though you may want to trim some white space off each side of the photo. Ordering photos "cropped" may cut off part of the photo in order to fit the image onto the photo paper.

Tax Reporting
Because the federal government requires that we report payment information, you must enter your social security number or your company's federal tax ID number in the payment section in order to be paid. If you earn more than $600 in a calendar year, you will receive a 1099 form from dotPhoto at the beginning of the next calendar year.

How can I protect my images from theft by copying?
You can be protected in three ways. First, your original image is never available to viewers who see only a screen-sized image; the full-sized image is parked on our servers and only used when someone prints a photo. Second, you can turn off "right-click copy" in your account by clicking on My Account and Privacy Settings in Account Information. Third, when using dotPhoto's Upload Tool, choose the Advanced Upload Style and set up a watermark that adds the word "Proof" in the middle of every photo. Even if someone manages to copy the photo from the screen, they will only capture a picture that says "Proof" in the middle. The watermark will only appear to a guest of your account; you will not see "Proof" when you look at you images as the owner of the account.

I want to print posters and photo merchandise. What are the image sizes required?
Complete details about the products we sell are available in the store section. Pixel sizes by product are available here: Poster Pixel Sizes

Can I add video to a dotPhoto Show?
Yes.  The dotPhoto Show is a great way to create a premium product that shows off your story-telling and editing skills.  To add video to a dotPhoto Show, join any dotPhoto member plan (they all include video storage), and convert video to Flash before uploading.  Click here for free video-to-Flash converter.  This dotPhoto Show contains an example of a slide and a short video:  Sample dotPhoto Show with Video

Can I sell files as downloads?
Yes.  Click here to learn how to sell downloads.

Is it hard to make my own free photo web site?
It's easy to make a web site: just click on My Web Site tab in your dotPhoto account and follow the prompts.  It takes about five minutes.  We'll even help you make banners or spruce up your site.  Just send us an email. You can use your dotPhoto web site either as your primary web site or as an adjunct site for selling photos. (You do not have to use the web site feature.)

What's next for dotPhoto?
We're enabling virtually every kind of image commerce you can imagine.  In the last six months, dotPhoto has rolled out the first online mixing and motion effects (see our Ken Burn effects for the dotPhoto Show), improved web site features, upgraded cart, new products and packaging and even the ability to send images to phones.  If there is something that you're particularly interested in selling on dotPhoto, please let us know!

To start selling your photos now, simply log in, click on the My Account link, tell us how you want to be paid, and set your prices.

Macintosh Upload Fix

dotPhoto periodically updates our upload tool, and it should automatically update your existing upload tool when you upload.  However, some users report that the upload tool does not update and that they see a red "X."  Potential fixes for this include: (A) Switch the dotPhoto Upload Style from "Basic" to "Advanced" or vice versa -- the change in style usually fixes the problem, (B) Re-start your Mac and let it finish installing other non-dotPhoto updates or (C) clear your Java cache with the following routine:

  1. Go to the /Applications/Utilities/Java directory.
  2. Open the Java x.xx Plugin Settings application (x.xx is your plugin version).

    Java Plug-in Cache

  3. Click on the Cache menu section.
  4. (For Java 1.3.x plugin) Click on the Clear JAR Cache button. Click OK.
  5. (For Java 1.4.x plugin) Click on the Clear button. Click Yes to confirm.

If neither of these works, please call dotPhoto at 609/ 434-0340 x400.  We want to ensure that it's easy to upload to your dotPhoto account.

Found money! Sell pix with no storage cost!

dotPhoto announces today a better plan for our professional photographers and an easy, free way for anyone to make money selling their digital photos.

We're rolling back storage costs to FREE.

That's right:  no cost to store your photos for resale.  If you've been paying for storage, you will not be billed in the next cycle.  dotPhoto will not automatically add album deletion dates:  selling photos is now easier on dotPhoto than anywhere on the web.

No more automatic Album Deletion Dates

Album Deletion Dates are no longer mandatory, but are still helpful when selling event photos.  Experience proves that most event photos are sold in the first week after the event and that, if no expiration date is set, participants are less likely to buy.  We encourage event photographers to set Album Deletion Dates in Album Settings to 90 or 120 days.

To earn money selling your photos:

  1. Sign in and go to My Account at the top of any page.
  2. Under Selling Your Photos, tell us how to pay you in Payment Information.
  3. Establish price plans in Set Custom Price Plans, and apply to your albums.

If you want to sell just one album, apply a price plan to that album.  Make the album public, and, if you want your other albums to be private, apply album passwords in Album Settings.  >>Sign In Now

How much can I earn?

You get the lion's share of each sale.  For instance, if you sell a 4x6 for $5, dotPhoto charges 12 cents for production, 3% (15 cents) for credit card fees, and 15% of the markup.  You set your own prices, so you determine how much you make.  dotPhoto will send you a check the following month when your earnings exceed just $10, or, if you elect direct deposit, we'll put money into your bank account on the first and fifteenth of the month.  >>Start Earning

How can I sell more photos?

First, take pictures that people want to buy:  landscapes, weddings, sports events, pet portraits and community events sell well.  Second, help people find your photos.  Caption your photos so they are searchable, and include links to your albums in your emails.  You can even add a dotPhoto Show widget to your blog or create your own free web site in dotPhoto's My Web Site tab.

Why not make some money from your talents?  Sell some of those beautiful landscapes as posters on dotPhoto!

Happy selling!

Privacy, Web Widgets & Early Easter

Dear dotPhotographer,

Here are the latest improvements to dotPhoto and answers to some of your questions!

Pre-Sized dotPhoto Show Widgets

Now it's even easier to plug dotPhoto Shows into your web site, blog or even HTML email.  When watching your dotPhoto Show, click on "Embed" at the top of the screen and choose "Widget."  Copy and paste this code into the HTML in your blog or web site and you can have a miniature dotPhoto Show "widget" anywhere on the web.                      >> See how it works here

When I forward a show or album to friends, are they able to see all of my albums or only the one I send them to view?

That depends on how you have set up your password protection.  You can apply a password to albums in the Album Settings under Organize in the left bar.  Guests who click back to an album will not see password-protected albums, but will see only that album and others that have the same password.  Albums without passwords are visible as are albums that have the same password as the invited album.
If you want an album to remain private, password-protect it.  If you want all your guests to see an album, do not password-protect it.  If you want some guests to see a group albums, put the same password on that group of albums.  If you give those friends your login and the password for a group of albums, your friends will see only that group when they log in.

What does a guest password protect?

You can set up a guest password in Account Information under My Account to ensure that no one can get into your album with only your login.  However, guest passwords also block access to your dotPhoto Web Site without a login and password.                                          >>Sign In Now

Would you share...?

Speaking of Easter, we were looking at a picture of Da Vinci's Last Supper, and we  wondered what it might look like if it were digitally enhanced.  Could we re-touch the digital version and see it as the artist might have originally painted it?  Unfortunately, we have not been able to find a good digital version of the painting.  There is a 16GB version on the web, but we can't use it, so we thought we'd ask if someone happens to have a good digital image (10,000 pixels wide) of Da Vinci's Last Supper.

If you have a great dotPhoto Show, we'd like to feature it in our new public gallery.  If you don't mind sharing, send your Show or Da Vinci to editor@dotphoto.com or call Glenn at 609/ 434-0340 x 301.

Thanks for sharing!

dotPhoto Newsletter - 2-26-08

Photo news you can use – plus our Quadrennial Leap Year Sale!

Dear dotPhotographer,

Our members ask us lots of great questions . . .

1. What's a 4xD print size?
The 4 by D (digital) is the perfect print for most digital cameras.  At 4 inches by 5.33 inches, it's the same ratio (1.33) as the sensors in most digital cameras, so you get the whole photo every time – instead of losing heads and feet on your snapshots or printing "uncropped" and getting white space on two sides.  The traditional 4x6 print has a ratio of 1.5, so the edges of your print are always different from the edges of your image.  Next time you print snapshots, try the 4xD.  It's the same price but with less hassle.

2. Is there an easy way to rearrange my photos?
dotPhoto's Rearrange function is found under the Organize menu on the left. Rearrange lets you sort by date taken, date uploaded or title.  Many of us like to see photos in chronological order, and that information is usually recorded in your image file.  You can also batch-title images with the method featured below to make it easy to sort by title.

To upload in a specific sequence so that your photos don't get "out of order," choose the Advanced upload and, under Upload Type, choose Sequential.  This is slower than Multi-File, which uploads three files at once, but preserves any order that you may have established prior to upload.  (Upload type is available only in Internet Explorer.)  The Rearrange feature also lets you drop and drag photos in a particular order.  Don't forget to hit "Save" at the top or bottom of the page after you rearrange your images.

3. Can I add a dotPhoto "widget" to my blog or web site?
Widgets are little windows that you can plug in around the web.  Let's say you put together a dotPhoto Show that introduces you and your best ideas for your blog.  You can mingle your photos with music and PowerPoint slides, and park your dotPhoto Show widget in your blog's navigation bar.  We've expanded our tutorial to explain how to add Page Elements on Google Blogger here:
http://dotphoto1.blogspot.com

Batch Rotate Your Photos

Many cameras now include gravity-activated sensors that tell dotPhoto how you were holding the camera, so dotPhoto can automatically rotate images upon upload.  You can also rotate your photos in a batch which is must faster than clicking on every photo.  From the thumbnail view in album, select each photo that needs rotation in one direction:  for instance, all photos to rotate right.  Then, under the Organize menu, click on Rotate Right. If you've uploaded lots of photos, you can rotate more of them at the same time by clicking on Display Settings and choosing 6 across by 12 rows:  this will let you look at 72 images at a time.

                                                                                               >>Sign-In Now

Batch Title Your Photos

You can edit titles and captions efficiently by clicking on "Edit Titles" from the thumbnail view.  This displays a page of thumbnails and captions that you can edit by clicking through fields.  Like batch rotation, this is a big time saver.

                                                                                                >>Sign-In Now

TIP:   How do I view the dotPhoto Show "full screen"?
There's a small box with four arrows in the control area of the dotPhoto Show.  Click on that box to expand to full screen.

Selling and Buying Digital Downloads

We are sometimes asked how to sell or buy digital downloads.  Up front, let's admit that this is a legacy process that we have not gotten around to improving;  however, it does work.  The process is designed around a public search for images, not a link to a photo with an opportunity to buy a download.  We'll improve this process, but this is how it works now.

If you're a professional photographer who wants to sell original files, here's how to set it up.

  1. Make sure people can find your photos when they search for them.  The best way is to include key words in the caption of each image and at the album level.  If every photo is labeled "Basketball game," your clients will have a hard time finding the pictures they want to buy.
  2. Go into your price plans in the My Account section (link at top of page.)
  3. Establish prices for standard and hi-res downloads -- we suggest at least $5 and $10.
  4. Make sure the price plan is applied to your album.
  5. Go into the album and, under the Organize menu on the left, click on Album Settings.
  6. In Album Settings, click on "Allow Public Search" and "Allow Sale of Digital Downloads."  Your customers will have to be able to find images in the public search in order to buy them:  they cannot (unfortunately, yet) buy from within the album.  You also must ensure that you specifically allow the sale of digital downloads for each album where you want to sell original downloads.

To buy digital downloads:

  1. Be aware that most photographers do NOT want to sell their original images, AND that if you purchase and download these images, you may use them only for your personal use.  If the photographer has not authorized the sale of the download, dotPhoto can do nothing more to help you obtain these images:  the original images belong to the photographer who captured them.
  2. Go to the dotPhoto Gallery and search for the image.  For instance, search for "lighthouse."
  3. In the search results, a thumbnail with a light bulb icon means that it can be purchased for download.  Clicking on the lightbulb adds the image to a virtual "light box," which is the traditional term for an illuminated box of slides for consideration.
  4. You may add add more than one image to your light box, and then click on the "Light box" icon at the top of the page to determine which image you want to purchase.
  5. To purchase, click on the thumbnail of the image you want to buy.  You will be asked to pay for the image, and, a few minutes after you have paid, you will receive an email with downloading instructions.

Our Alt-Christmas Show

We discovered the song, "Stop Giving Me Crap for Christmas" by Bobby Gaylor, and decided to illustrate it in this dotPhoto Show.  I love Christmas, but am less excited about the commercialization of it.  (Here at dotPhoto, we like to think that we're creating new ways to enjoy Christmas memories.)  This nifty song celebrates the "As Seen on TV" products we grew up with.  Thanks, Bobby Gaylor!

How can I scan my slides, old prints & whacky film stuff?

We've all got ancient slides, prints and the precious memories of our childhood in some dark closet.  While you're reading this, it's turning back into the dust that has already settled on it.  The slides are getting brittle, the film is breaking and the photos are yellowing.  Sooner or later, we want to digitize this stuff.

Lots of people call us about digitizing, and we've looked into that business, but it requires an investment in specialized high-speed scanning equipment, a lot of handwork, and, in some cases, overseas plants.  I once took a day to investigate the industry and found one company in the U.S. that made me comfortable.  I like Ed Klar because he's dedicated to converting analog to digital.  It's not a sideline to him, and you're not sending your memories to the Philipines and hoping that they'll come back.  He'll even let you try his service for free.

So if you want to scan you pre-digital memories, we recommend:

Downloading from dotPhoto with Vista

dotPhoto enables downloads of original files from your own account.  Guests ask all the time if they can download files, but that is not allowed because the files belong to the owners.

Successful downloading requires two components:  the latest version of Java available here:  www.java.com -- and the cooperation of your operating system.  Microsoft created Vista to protect us from ourselves.  Instead of actually accomplishing something, Vista first asks, "Are you the person who just asked me to do that?" -- or hides the ability in some obscure backwater.  It's maddening, but here's what you need to know to download from dotPhoto if you are a Vista user.

In your browser, click on Tools | Internet Options | the Security Tab | the Sites button...

... click OFF the check box "Require server verification", and add www.dotphoto.com both as http:// and https://

You put your right foot in, you put your right out.

The good news is:  once it's set up, it works.

I am surprised how often I want to download my files.  It's a very handy dotPhoto feature.

Making Great Prints

Resolution -- how many dots per inch?

Printing maxes out at about 300 dots per inch, and dotPhoto can get good photos out of about 180 dots per inch, so you can apply these multipliers to just about any image size.  For instance, a great 4x6 would be (4" x 300 dots) x (6" x 300 dots) or 1200 x 1800.  A larger resolution image would also make a great 4x6, but it would be no better than a 1200 x 1800.

There will also be a small "slop" area around the sides of the photo of perhaps an 1/8 of an inch because the image is exposed slightly off the sides of the photo paper to ensure that the paper is exposed from edge to edge.  Therefore, photographers should not have important picture elements like a face against any edge of the photo;  the face might be slightly cropped even though the image size is perfect.

What is cropping?

The images that our cameras take are almost always different shapes than the paper we choose to print on.  If we were to stretch the pictures to fit the paper, our images would be distorted, so we trim the edges instead.  Cropping is trimming your image so that it matches the ratio of the paper you choose to print on.

As this chart shows, paper sizes have different ratios.  Since most digital cameras capture a ratio of 1.33, the industry created a "4xD" size (4-by-Digital) that does not require cropping with many but not all digital images.  The 4xD is 5.33 inches on one side instead of 6 inches, but it prints the entire 1.33 ratio photo without requiring cropping.

Images that do not match the exact ratio of the size -- for example, a 2000 by 2000 dot image on 4" x 6" paper -- can be cropped or uncropped by selecting the check box in the dotPhoto cart.  If uncropped, the entire image will be printed with white space on each side.  In the example just given, you would see a square 4"x4" photo with an inch of white space on either side.

If you choose to crop your photos, dotPhoto crops images according to what is called "Top Medium Cropping."  Since most faces appear toward the top of the photo, our cropping window captures the area half way between the top edge and the center of the photo.  This ensures that more photos include the faces.

You can see how your photo will print in any size by clicking on the "See Cropping" link at the bottom right of an image, and then choosing the Print Size beneath the picture.

How can I perfectly crop my photos?

You can perfectly crop your photos to a specific size in two ways.  dotPhoto's online editing tools enable you to crop by size:  click on "Edit" at the top right of a photo, then click on the "Crop" tab.   You can pick the size you wish to print, move the red cropping window, preview the cropped photo, and save that photo without affecting your original.

Crop before Uploading

You can also crop all your images before uploding them to dotPhoto.  The new dotPhotoGo by Noromis software is a great tool that fixes red-eye, adjust color, enables cropping and uploads to dotPhoto.  You can download dotPhoto Go free of charge here:  www.dotphoto.com/dotphotogo

Cropping and Resolution

When cropping, remember that you still need enough resolution to print the photo.  If you select a tiny piece of even a high-resolution photo, you might not have enough pixels in that tiny piece to print a good photo.  However, when you save the croppred image, you can check on the resolution beneath the photo.

By considering your resolution and cropping before you print, you will have excellent photos virtually every time.

New upload, cropping and auto-fix software for dotPhoto

We're introducing this PC-based software to:

  1. Make it even easier to get photos from a camera and upload them to your dotPhoto account
  2. Enable processor-intensive functions like adjusting, cropping and red-eye fix on your local PC for better responsiveness
  3. Provide a platform for the very best desktop printing.

The original version of this software has been reviewed as perhaps the best way to print with your desktop printer.  In our opinion, desktop printing is difficult and time-consuming, and Noromis has a great tool to make it easier.  The dotPhoto Go by Noromis software also includes the ability to upload to dotPhoto.

Why would we offer better desktop printing software?  Our customers generally print 50 to 100 prints at a time online (some print over 1000), and we don't see that happening at home because it's too much trouble.  However, there are many occasions when you want a print to take to school or a few photos immediately.  dotPhoto Go by Noromis covers all the bases.  In addition, because dotPhoto provides free download capabilities, our users can email wireless images from camera phones, download them to their desktop, and print locally with dotPhoto Go.

dotPhoto Go's cropping tool is particularly powerful, and should enable our users to get more perfect prints every time.

Press Release

Super fast uploads on dotPhoto

If you're uploading hundreds of photos at once, you may want to try a beta of dotPhoto's super fast upload component.  A few caveats, though:

  • This is in beta, so check your final results.
  • Photos will be slightly out of order because the component opens up multiple connections to dotPhoto:  images are not sequentially uploaded.  Of course, you can use dotPhoto's re-arrange function to re-establish order alphabetically or by time.
  • You need a high-speed connection for this service.  If you have something like Verizon's FIOS service, you'll experience an incredibly fast upload.

It's easy to do:

  1. Login to your dotPhoto account.
  2. Copy this link to your URL address line:  http://www.dotphoto.com/MemUploadComponent.asp?Conn=4
  3. The "Conn=4" establishes the number of connections.  We recommend keeping it under 5.
  4. Choose your images using dotPhoto's standard multiple upload tool.
  5. When you start the upload, you should see a window like this that uploads multiple images at once:

Making a great dotPhoto Show

Photo-sharing is dividing into two groups: photos you want to linger over and fast-moving images that, taken together, are entertaining and impressionistic. If you’ve ever been bored by a slide show, you understand the need for a new type of show that has faster images and more movement.

The Linger Show

Some images are so unusual that we want to linger over and absorb each photo. This “Painted Cats” dotPhoto Show falls into that category:

http://www.dotphoto.com/Go.asp?l=dotPhotoPM&P=&SID=142320&Show=Y

The Speed Show

Most of us take more photos digitally than we did with film: film was expensive and digital is virtually free, so we can take lots of digital photos and combine them in quick transitions to create movement and more entertaining dotPhoto Shows than the traditional, slow-paced slide show. This dotPhoto Show about St. Patrick’s Day combines lots of photos in rapid succession to present a pastiche of Irish and Irish-American culture:

http://www.dotphoto.com/Go.asp?l=dotPhotoPM&P=&SID=141212&Show=Y

How to make your own “Speed Show”

· Change the transitions and photo durations in your dotPhoto Show by changing the numbers under the transitions and photos:

· In the show above, the image of the cliff is displayed for one second, but subsequent similar images appear only in transition – the actual duration of the last image is “0.”

· Linger on images that set up a group of photos or particularly dramatic.

· Give your viewers time to breathe by creating islands of interest every 10 or 15 photos. This also ensures that the dotPhoto Show cache can keep up with fast transitions for viewers with slower Internet service.

· Exciting music makes a difference. AltaVista.com has a good MP3 music search has is helpful in finding songs to illustrate almost any occasion.

Your own vintage: award-winning wines with photo labels

We will serve no wine without a really interesting label.

Who doesn’t like to see a happy dog or a red car on a wine bottle? I googled “black dog wine” and “red car wine,” and discovered actual wines by these names.

Why not sponsor your own award-winning wine with your own label?

Now you can label your own wine on dotPhoto – and you’ll know that it’s good because it comes from Napa Valley, California and has won actual awards. These make great gifts for holiday parties, New Year parties and any occasion.

Your have your choice of:

  • 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon Paso Robles 2 Gold, 6 Silver and 2 Bronze Medals
  • 2002 Chardonnay Private Reserve 1 Gold and 2 Silver Medals
  • 2000 Brut Champagne Private Reserve 4 Silver and 4 Bronze Medals
  • Extra Dry Sparkling Wine Sparkles by itself
  • Non Alcoholic Fruit Juice You want medals for fruit juice?

How to make your own labels

dotPhoto’s label tool lets you plug any photo into different label designs, and you can even design your own custom 4.5” x 2.75”. I found that it’s best to use at least 675 x 412 pixels for the “blank” custom label: position your graphics in a frame with the ratio of 1.64 width-to-height or you may have cropping problems.  (Some custom designs are below.)

Making a Music Video on dotPhoto

Or the Alt-Christmas message:  Stop Giving Me Useless &*$% for Christmas

We like to make holiday shows with the dotPhoto Show tool, but we came upon a hilarious song while putting together the actual Christmas show that inspired us to create our first parody music video.

http://www.dotphoto.com/Go.asp?l=dotPhotoPM&P=&SID=127053&Show=Y

This show highlights some of the new transitions including horizontal and vertical squeezes, fly-ins from every angle and rotations.  It also shows how you can time transitions and image durations to match up with almost any musical track.

You can see the real Christmas show here:

http://www.dotphoto.com/Go.asp?l=dotPhotoPM&P=&SID=127014&Show=Y

Here's an earlier version that was lighter on Santa Clauses and used different music.  My wife hated this and convinced me that it didn't get the message across.

http://www.dotphoto.com/Go.asp?l=dotPhotoPM&P=&SID=126872&Show=Y

I hope no one is offended by the parody show -- so far, it's received an enthusiastic response. Part of the risk of any holiday showing is wondering who will be offended. This is particularly true at the end of the year:  do you go with Happy Holidays and water down everybody's message?  I've chosen the other path, which is to offer multiple shows with interesting images for diverse celebrants.  We don't have the Hanakah show up yet, but a friend from Israel who is in the photo business, has promised to send some great images.  I hope to have them up this week.

Formatting Text on dotPhoto

Although dotPhoto text boxes usually display unformatted text, they can display rich text through HTML. Even if you don’t write HTML, you can add rich text to dotPhoto caption boxes with an HTML editor.  Microsoft Word’s HTML code works fine in dotPhoto’s Description field in the Album settings, but not so well for the Captions field under a photo.

We tested a number of HTML editors including Microsoft Frontpage, Google’s Writely, and various free downloads, but only one service worked well – this free demo of a “rich text” box:

http://www.richercomponents.com/asp-net-components/rich-text-box/demos.html

This component allows you to paste in formatted text from Microsoft Word (see the arrow for the Word-paste function), and then tune it up for HTML.  You might have to adjust fonts, and, if you want closely spaced lines, you’ll need to delete the line endings and replace them with Shift-Enter.

Once you format your text, click on the HTML box in the lower right, and copy the entire HTML block.

In dotPhoto, click on Edit Title under Organize next to your photo.

Paste the HTML into the Caption field next to your photo.  Save and Exit.

In moments, you’ll have great-looking text like this:

Add dotPhoto Shows to MySpace, eBay, Xanga, Typepad & other sites

Click here to watch this dotPhoto Show!

NOTE:  you can choose one of 300 songs or add your own music
           to your dotPhoto Shows.

What is a dotPhoto Show?
A dotPhoto Show is a Flash presentation that is automatically compiled when you upload photos to dotPhoto.  By clicking on “Edit,” you change every attribute of the show including transitions, image order, credits, music and more.  You can even add your voice to photos with a microphone attached to your PC or by capturing photos on your camera phone with Pictavision.  (See www.pictavision.com)

Now add dotPhoto Shows to your blog or web site
You can now play a multimedia voice, music, video and photo Flash presentation within a MySpace profile.  This enables MySpace users to create narrated introductions and stories that provide more personalized and interesting profiles.  The "Play-in-Place" dotPhoto Show service is free of charge. Play-In-Place dotPhoto Shows also work in the blog section of MySpace and in most other online services.

Enhance the selling experience on eBay
Here’s a sample show that was used to sell a product on eBay.  Start to finish, the presentation took about ten minutes to create. You might want turn off music for “selling” shows by toggling off the green check mark in the music section of the dotPhoto Show.

Sample eBay Selling Show

dotPhoto Shows on Xanga
To add a show to Xanga, go to your blog, click on the Edit HTML box, and paste in the code.

dotPhoto Shows on TypePad
To add a show to a TypePad blog, click the Edit HTML tab, and paste in the code.

Does the dotPhoto Show work with every web site and every blog?
The Play-In-Place dotPhoto Show works with Microsoft FrontPage, Blogger, and most web software when you paste the link into HTML.  Some blog sites seem to “eat” hosted links, but we’re working on that.  If you paste the link into the HTML, save, then review the HTML and find that the link is missing, you’ll know that your blogging software has eaten the link.  However, the dotPhoto Show code works with most leading web sites to present a more interesting story, profile, product -- or whatever you can imagine.

Uploading to dotPhoto from your camera phone

There are two ways to upload photos from your camera phone to dotPhoto:

  1. Set up your phone’s email address in your dotPhoto account information, and email photos directly to upload@dotphoto.com (See more below.)

  2. Buy Pictavision 5 from your carrier. The latest version of Pictavision is available in the U.S. on more advanced phones from Verizon Wireless, Alltel and Intellos. It will be available on most BREW carriers soon, but the software manages every aspect of the phone including camera control, so it requires a fairly advanced phone. Pictavision 5 also enables you to speak a voice caption with each photo that is saved on dotPhoto and becomes a part of your dotPhoto Shows. If you subscribe to Pictavision, you automatically receive free video storage after the first time that you access your dotPhoto account from your phone.

See the explanatory Pictavision 5 video.

More on uploading photos from your phonePhones from every major carrier should be able to upload photos and short videos to dotPhoto by emailing them. If you don’t know your phone’s email address, try emailing a photo to your standard email address and look at the return address when the mail arrives; the return address is your phone’s email.

I’ve made it easier to send emails to dotPhoto from my phone by setting up upload@dotphoto as AAA dotPhoto in my address book: I don’t have to type in the address or scroll through my address book every time I take a photo.
